Wilsons first began trading in Beaumont Street, Hamilton in 1939 from premises underneath what is now the Hamilton Clock Tower. The business began trading as Wilsons Better Homes under the ownership of William Edward Wilson, (1896-1973) and his wife Maude Olive Wilson (1898-1978).

Just as a matter of interest William Wilson was born the 14th child in a family of 17 children.

In 1940 the business was relocated into premises at 14 Wheeler Place (part of what is now the Civic Theatre).

In 1955 Roy Edward Wilson (son of William) joined the firm to concentrate on the sale of small businesses and motels. In 1985 Peter Edward Wilson (son of Roy & Mavis Wilson) was the 3rd generation member of the Wilson family to join the firm as a salesman. Very soon after as a result of continued illness Roy Wilson retired and sold the business to Griffiths Shearman Real Estate Pty Ltd which at that time was a competitor to Wilsons in the sale of small businesses.

Both companies merged in 1985 and became Wilsons Business Brokers under the guidance of Garth Griffiths. In 1987 Wilsons Business Brokers became the first business of its kind to develop and install a fully computerised business listing system. This computer system is constantly being improved and updated to keep pace with ever changing technology. In 1987 Wilsons published its first 32 page colour magazine of “Businesses for Sale” and soon after developed its first web page. In September 1992 as a result of steady growth, the business purchased its own premises and moved to 59a Stewart Avenue, Hamilton South (the premises in which it continues to trade).
